Thibaut Courtois and Cesar Azpilicueta both expressed their delight at lifting the FA Cup this season and believe it is important for us to continue the habit of lifting trophies.
The pair were rock solid in goal and defence respectively as we kept Manchester United at bay at Wembley on Saturday to lift our eighth FA Cup trophy, with Eden Hazard’s first-half penalty proving to be the difference between the sides.
Both players spoke after the win and both expressed their desire to play their part in helping the Blues lift more trophies in the future.
‘As a top team, it’s all about winning trophies,’ said our Belgian keeper. ‘Of course we were disappointed to miss out on a Champions League place but I’m going to go away now to the World Cup, hopefully play well and then come back ready to work hard to put this club back at the top.
‘As players, we want to work hard to keep winning trophies and that is what we will try to do. We won the Premier League last season, the FA Cup this year and let’s hope we can win more trophies next season too.
‘It was a tough game and the game was a bit slow from both sides. In the first half, we tried to create problems but it was difficult as they had more of the ball than us. But a great bit of play from Eden [Hazard] saw him get in front of his man and win the penalty.
‘Once he scored and we went one nil-up, I think consciously you drop a little bit back and we said at half-time that we couldn’t do that for the whole game.
‘They pressed us a lot in the second-half as they tried to get back into the game, but I was just happy I was able to make a few saves and keep a clean sheet to help us win the trophy.’
Azpilicueta, who was named in Spain’s World Cup squad yesterday, also highlighted the hunger in the squad to deliver more trophies and paid tribute to the Chelsea fans for their support throughout the season.
‘I really enjoyed that, for our last game of the season it was a great effort to win the FA Cup,’ beamed the defender. ‘We had to defend well and we did just that to ensure it was a great final day of the season.
‘I think for the first part of the season we were really good, but then we had a couple of weeks where we weren’t at our best and we dropped off a little.
‘So it was very important for us finish the season and to win a trophy for the club and for the fans. They deserved this.’
